MonStr vs Excel and WhatsApp: where to keep punch lists and inspections
A spreadsheet and a work chat look free until snags start getting lost and the client report eats your evenings. We compared the three on what matters on site.
Side by side, step by step
| What matters | MonStr | Excel | Messengers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where a snag is recorded | A pin at a point on the drawing | A row in a table, location described in words | A photo in a chat, not tied to a place |
| Photos | Attached to the snag, “before” and “after” | Stored separately, in folders | Lost in the feed and compressed |
| Owner and deadline | On every snag, overdue items show at once | A column someone has to keep updated | Agreements buried in messages |
| Fix status | Open, done, verified — with the contractor’s photo | Updated by hand, often out of date | “Done?” — “Yes” |
| Building standards | Standards library, the reference fills in itself | Copied by hand | None |
| Client report | PDF, Word or Excel from a template — out of the system | Put together by hand | Everything has to be gathered from chats first |
| Working on site | Mobile app that works offline | Awkward on a phone | Convenient, but no structure |
| History and disputes | Full history of every snag | File versions like “final_2” | Scrolling through chats |
| Access and security | Roles, activity log, 2FA, own server possible | The file gets forwarded to anyone | Everyone in the chat has access |
